Charlie Dvergsten set a school record for strikeouts in a single season as he fired a three-hit shutout to help give Storm Lake a 5-0 win over Newell-Fonda on Tuesday at Tornado Field.
Dvergsten, who walked none, struck out 13 batters in the game and now has 110 for the season, breaking the old mark of 103 set by Mark Eddie in 2021.
Storm Lake (12-11) scored two runs in the second inning on a throwing error and an RBI sacrifice fly by David Gonzalez-Santos. The Tornadoes made it 3-0 in the third on an RBI sacrifice fly by Jake White.
It stayed that way until the sixth when Storm Lake plated two runs on an RBI single by Gonzalez-Santos and a passed ball.
Storm Lake tallied nine hits in the game. Dvergsten and Gonzalez-Santos each had two while Carson Lullmann, Brock Edwards, Rylan Richardson, White and Bobby Boeckman each added one hit.
Storm Lake committed two errors in the game.
“I was really happy with how we played offensively,” Storm Lake coach Michael Knapp said. “Nine hits and only two strikeouts off their two good pitchers is a lot to be proud of. When we get that production along with the pitching the last two days from Charlie and Carson, we are a well-rounded team.”
Newell-Fonda (14-10) was held to three hits. Ty Tauber had two singles and Max Carlson one.
Carlson took the loss. He allowed four hits and three unearned runs, walked none and struck out two in four innings. Brooks Bellcock gave up five hits and two runs, walked none and struck out none in two innings of relief.
Newell-Fonda committed four errors in the game.
“A lot of credit goes to Storm Lake and Charlie Dvergsten’s ability to keep us off-balance at the plate,” Newell-Fonda coach Nathan Baron said. “Hats off to him. He’s a very good pitcher. I thought our two pitchers, Max and Brooks, pitched really well. They kept us in the game. We just could not generate any kind of offense.”
Newell-Fonda plays Boyer Valley (7-9) in the first round of the district tournament on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Moville.
