Star Spangled Spectacular 42nd Annual Ride-RunFather-son duo team up to win event

Fifty teams finished the 42nd annual Star Spangled Spectacular Ride-Run on Sunday.

The 11-mile bike and run race around the lake was won by the father and son team of Chris Bowers and Dalton Bowers of Ottumwa. They finished in a time of 56 minutes and 44 seconds.

Chris Bowers is the director of the Area 15 Regional Planning Agency. Dalton Bowers just graduated from Simpson College where he participated in track and cross country.

Nick and Cali Sorbe finished third overall with a time of 59:48.

The first female team to finish was Halle Patten, a senior at Storm Lake High School, and her sister-in-law, Kari Patten, who is a physicians assistant in Webster City. They finished with a time of 1 hour, 9 minutes and 9 seconds.

The top coed team was Valerie Escamilla and Federico Mendoza of Lakeside with a time of 59:47. Escamilla is a dental student at the University of Iowa. Mendoza, a graduate of Storm Lake High School, is manager at Jack Lynx in Laurens. They were second overall.

This year’s race was the 41st for Storm Laker Clark Fort and the 39th for retired Storm Lake teacher and coach John Brostad.
