Scholar, lexicographer and humanitarian, Manoocher Aryanpur passed away Dec. 22, 2021 in La Jolla, Calif. He was born in Tehran, Iran on Sept. 2, 1929, to Abbas and Robaneh Aryanpur-Kashani. Educated in Iran and the United States, he came to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship in 1957 to study English literature first at the University of Kansas and then at the University of Colorado. After obtaining a PhD, he worked as a professor of English literature at multiple institutions across the globe. These included Wartburg College in Waverly; Buena Vista College in Storm Lake; the University of Missouri at Kansas City; and the College of Translation in Tehran, Iran, the latter of which he founded with his father. In addition to teaching generations of students across the world, he was a dedicated lexicographer, and with his father he produced a series of outstanding bilingual Persian-English dictionaries that are in wide use and remain the standard today. His kindness, generosity and wit touched all who knew him, and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife Sherry Aryanpur; his children: John Aryanpur, David Aryanpur, Mehri DelPino, Julie Horsley, Rob Fiorendino and Gino Fiorendino; and many grandchildren. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
