Most Storm Lakers already know that I have officially started a write-in campaign for Mayor of Storm Lake. But I think it’s important to follow through with a little more explanation about why I am running, and why the time is right for me to serve the city in this role.
For the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving on the city council. This opportunity has offered me valuable insights into the Storm Lake community, local government and the importance of civic engagement. Each day brings unique challenges that require careful management and ongoing collaboration among our city’s leaders.
Although I am highly engaged in the community, I am aware that some residents may not know me personally. My background in social work and education has provided me with the skills and experience necessary for ongoing service to Storm Lake. I have learned the importance of listening to and lifting up diverse voices. I’ve built problem-solving skills and learned that I do not personally have all the right answers. Good leadership requires humility and a willingness to collaborate. And I believe these are the qualities we should work to develop throughout our lives.
When Mayor Mike Porsch announced his decision not to seek re-election, I immediately understood the significant impact his absence would have on our city. In the wake of his announcement, I was surprised that numerous community members reached out and urged me to consider running for mayor.
I took these suggestions to heart, though I genuinely hoped that another experienced and qualified individual would step forward to continue the important work of leading our city. When that did not happen, I reflected deeply on the needs of Storm Lake and what more I might be able to offer.
Receiving such genuine encouragement and respect from community members has been incredibly humbling. Their support led me to thoughtfully reflect and seek advice from respected leaders in Storm Lake. I began these discussions in mid-September, carefully considering the responsibilities and impact of the mayoral role. After weighing all perspectives and recognizing the trust that so many have placed in me, I ultimately decided to officially launch a write-in campaign for mayor.
As a city council member, I represent residents and businesses on several committees, including chairing the Lake Improvement Committee and serving on the board of Storm Lake United to support retail, tourism and economic growth. I am passionate about helping others though service supporting community efforts to provide necessities such as food, health screenings and beds for kids to those who need them.
Coordinating focused efforts to serve our residents is a constant challenge I love and look forward to. Effective leadership in Storm Lake requires a strong sense of responsibility and follow-through, relevant experience and the patience to navigate difficult situations. I believe these qualities are essential for anyone seeking to lead our city and help our community continue to thrive.
If I am elected mayor, I will remain an active presence in the community while also strengthening important relationships within the county and across the state to bring necessary resources to keep Storm Lake moving forward.
I humbly ask the Storm Lake community to vote and write in Meg McKeon for Mayor.
Meg McKeon, Storm Lake
