William Lang

William "Willie" Lang, 68, of Alta died Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake after a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services will take place Saturday, July 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta. Visitation will take place Friday, July 12, from 4-7 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Willie was born June 23, 1956, in Storm Lake to Dave and Wilma (McConkey) Lang. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Willie graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1974.

Willie went into a plumbing and backhoe business with his dad, Lang Plumbing and Heating, for many years. He later transitioned to AmeriGas, where he retired. After retirement, he started working with Boyer Ridge Manufacturing in Early and for Christensen Farms in Albert City.

On Oct. 22, 1977, Willie was united into marriage to Jan (Wright) Lang in Schaller at United Methodist Church. They were blessed with two daughters, Shannon and Shayla.

Willie loved riding his Harley motorcycle, working at his shop, “junking,” enjoying coffee and socializing with his friends. He also enjoyed bowling, camping, country dancing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. He served on the city council in Alta until his health declined.

He was such a proud grandpa and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish Willie’s memory include his daughters: Shannon (Dave) Strand of Alta; Shayla (Steve) Lange of Storm Lake; sisters: Marla (Jim) Lawson of Overland Park, Kan.; Pamela (Randy) Persoon of Alta; and Beverly Schlegel Lang (Mitch Goodlet) of Raytown, Mo.; grandchildren: Zackery Sutton (Ashley Wagenaar) of Alta; Hailey Sutton of Alta; and Sophia Lange of Storm Lake; mother-in-law Darlene Wright of Storm Lake; sister-in-law: Judy (Ted) Wall of Schaller; and many nephews, nieces and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dave and Wilma (McConkey) Lang; wife Jan (Wright) Lang; father-in-law Robert Wright, Frank Koth; sister Deborah (Lang) Mueggenberg; grandparents: Tony and Irene Lang; William “Stub” and Hazel McConkey; and many uncles, aunts and friends.
