NWIAS Kirchner Cabin program

Posted

During the summer of 2024, excavations were conducted at the historic Kirchner Log House located on its original site on a hill three-fourths of a mile northwest of Peterson.

Built in 1867 and occupied until 1881, the log house served the family well during its 14 years as a residence. After a new house was built, the log house continued to be used and was listed in the early 1990s on the National Register of Historic Places. The 2024 excavations were followed by restoration work on the house, which should ensure its presence into the future.

Please join the Northwest Chapter of the Iowa Archeological Society on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. for a presentation on the house and the excavations that yielded interesting information on this early historic site. A display of artifacts will be available for viewing prior to and after the talk. For more information or questions, email archaeologist@sanfordmuseum.org
