Music and muscle cars

Posted

The flashy red 1965 Pontiac GTO in this panoramic photo wasn’t actually the star of Sunday’s Municipal Band concert/car show, but in the same way every piece played by the band has a story, so did every vehicle in the car show.

Owner Eldridge Drury, 89, from Holstein said the GTO came from the factory with a 309-cubic-inch engine, which produced 360 horsepower. From the sounds of it, this muscle car is a part of the family. Drury remembers seeing it as “a bare frame on blocks.” His three boys, all of whom had “a heavy right foot,” “raised hell with it.” Drury’s wife Linda “keeps it up.”

Drury’s not sure how fast it can go, but “I’ve seen it over 100.” It’s not a parade car though. One year he brought it to Storm Lake for the Star Spangled Spectacular parade, but he said he had to leave. At a low speed, “it lopes” and it started getting hot. Sunday’s Municipal Band concert starts at 3 p.m.
