The Storm Lake Municipal Band is tuning up for its 90th season of concerts in the historic Sunset Park Bandshell.
Seven concerts are scheduled for this season, including every Sunday afternoon in June and the first week of July. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.
The first concert is Sunday, June 1 at 2 p.m. That season opening concert includes an open car show. Owners of classic and specialty cars are invited to take part, with no registration necessary. A parking area for the vehicles opens at 1 p.m.
Most of the concerts begin at 2 p.m., with the exception of the Sunday, June 8 concert, which starts at 3 p.m., so guests can attend the Kids’ Fest event in Chautauqua Park earlier in the afternoon and not miss the music.
A special July 3 evening concert takes place as part of the Star Spangled Spectacular activities, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Sunset Park.
The Municipal Band tradition continues to be strong, with one of the largest bands in memory performing last year. Musicians of all ages and from several area communities take part in the band, and newcomers are always welcome. The band performs a wide variety of music from marches and classical pieces to pop tunes and movie themes. Veteran music educator Tom Musel returns as band director, with Matt Pearson as concert announcer.
