The Okoboji Writers' and Songwriters' Retreat, scheduled for Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and the Lakeshore Center at Lake Okoboji, is excited to announce that acclaimed author, playwright and filmmaker Peter Hedges will be among the over 50 distinguished speakers sharing their expertise at the event.
Hedges’ multifaceted career spans novel writing, screenwriting, directing, and producing, making him a valuable addition to the retreat’s diverse lineup.
West Des Moines native Hedges gained prominence with his 1991 novel “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” which he adapted into a 1993 film, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
He further showcased his storytelling prowess with “About a Boy” (2002), “Pieces of April” (2003) and “Dan in Real Life” (2007), demonstrating a unique ability to blend humor with heartfelt narratives.
In 2018, he wrote and directed “Ben Is Back,” a poignant drama starring his son, Lucas Hedges, and Julia Roberts.
Beyond his film work, Hedges has contributed significantly to theater and literature. He co-founded the Edge Theatre in 1985, producing numerous plays, and has penned novels such as “An Ocean in Iowa” (1998) and “The Heights” (2010).
Hedges’ diverse experiences and insights will enrich the retreat, offering attendees a unique perspective on storytelling across multiple media.
