Harvey Buckendahl

Harvey Buckendahl, 79, of Storm Lake passed away peacefully at his home on May 30, 2025.

Funeral services will take place Thursday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 4, from 5-8 p.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Harvey was born on July 24, 1945, in Santa Monica, Calif., to Harvey and Frieda (Braunschweig) Buckendahl. He was confirmed in his faith on March 22, 1959, at Zion Lutheran Church. Harvey attended Rembrandt School and graduated with the Class of 1963. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from Sept. 16, 1963, to Sept. 16, 1966.

On Sept. 6, 1969, Harvey married the love of his life, Marian Smith, at the Storm Lake Methodist Chapel. Their marriage was filled with laughter, strength and devotion. Together they raised three children — Tammy, Dawn and Chad — and built a life grounded in love and family.

Harvey was known for his unwavering loyalty, dry wit and kind heart. He had a deep Christian faith that guided him throughout his life. His passion for cars began early and became a lifelong pursuit. Over 40 years ago, Harvey started his car detailing business, pouring his craftsmanship and pride into every vehicle he touched. His reputation for excellence earned him the trust of countless customers throughout the area. He also worked for many years at Witt Sales in Storm Lake and Spencer, and Service Master, where he was a valued employee and friend to many.

Harvey’s love for cars was rivaled only by the love he had for his family. He especially cherished being “Grandpa” and “Great-Grandpa.” His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. He attended their activities with pride, shared stories and made sure each one felt special. His face would light up at the sound of their voices, and he never missed an opportunity to tell others how proud he was of them.

He also enjoyed time with his Brewsters friends, attending car shows, watching NASCAR and taking the occasional trip to the casino. But home was where his heart truly was — especially when surrounded by the laughter and love of his family.

Left to cherish Harvey’s memory are his beloved wife of 55 years, Marian Buckendahl of Storm Lake; his loyal sidekick Zoey; and his children: Tammy (Marty) Peck of Storm Lake; Dawn (Deno) Huntoon of Spencer; and Chad (Megan) Buckendahl of Fort Collins, Colo. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda (Mike) Collins of Wahoo, Neb., and Shelley (Guy) McCausland of Camanche.

Harvey’s legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Victoria (Austin) Stille, Madison (Brandon) Burkard, Mason Peck, Tayler (Ryan) Kelsch, Ethan Huntoon, Aliza Huntoon and Leslie (Mike) Brunner; and his adored great-grandchildren: Remington, Wilder and Stanton Stille; Granger Burkard; Hadley and Rudy Kelsch; Chet, Kade and Charlie Brunner. Each one held a special place in his heart and he leaves behind countless cherished memories with them.

He is also fondly remembered by his siblings-in-law: Rosemary Henson, Karen (Leonard) Koch, Jim Smith, Susan (Mike) Gibbins, Kevin (Sandy) Smith and Lori (Scott) Watts; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Frieda Buckendahl; his beloved great-granddaughter, Murphy Burkard; his parents-in-law, Russell and Frances Smith; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Alice and Wayne Wallace; and his brother-in-law Howard Henson.

Harvey’s legacy of love, laughter and craftsmanship lives on in those he held dear. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
