Flags of the Fallen tonight in Sioux Rapids

Posted

The public is invited to Flags of the Fallen, a ceremony to be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the Sioux Rapids American  Legion building on Main Street.

The hall was flooded to a depth of about two and a half feet, soaking three totes of veterans flags in storage, said Suzie Haight, who is involved in the planning of the event.

She said her father, David Althaus, a Sioux Rapids veteran and adjutant/finance director for the post, remarked that the flags, set out on long tables to dry, reminded him of the flag-draped caskets of fallen soldiers. Legion members agreed that it would be appropriate to honor veterans and the American flag at this time.

Legion Chaplain Charlie Gilmore will conduct the ceremony. It will include prayer and taps. The event is expected to last about a half hour.

There are still three feet of water in the building’s basement, said Haight. Her husband William is commander of the post. Drywall will have to be replaced on the main floor, but other than that, Haight said damage was limited.
