Duane M. Birdsell, 75, passed away peacefully on Feb. 17, 2025, in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born on April 12, 1949, in Storm Lake, to the late Earl and Lydia Birdsell.
A natural-born storyteller and adventurer, Duane never met a stranger. His long career in sales began after college in the jewelry business followed by working alongside his father at the family business, Birdsell’s Furniture, in Storm Lake. Later, as a small business owner at the start of the cell-phone boom, he opened stores across Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Whether through his own ventures or working for others, sales was a perfect fit for his outgoing nature — he loved connecting with people, hearing their stories and finding shared experiences. His zest for life extended far beyond his work. He loved traveling, always chasing the goal of visiting all 50 states. He had a deep appreciation for old houses, history, architecture and long scenic drives (preferably in a sporty convertible), especially if they led to a charming small town or a new adventure.
He loved 80s music and cover band concerts; his willingness to join in on a spontaneous sing-along was a telling reflection of his lively spirit. Duane could captivate an audience with engaging tales of his many celebrity encounters. His presence was big, his laughter was loud and his enthusiasm for life was contagious.
Duane is survived by his siblings, Vicki Hout (Dick) and Gary Birdsell (Mary); his children: Greg Birdsell (Sandra), Stacy Birdsell (Matt O’Toole), Elizabeth Mutschler (Scott) and Chris Birdsell; his grandchildren: Jacob Birdsell, Cameron O'Toole, Max Mutschler and Molly Mutschler; and his wife, Lisa Tomlinson.
Per his wishes, there will be no formal service. Those who wish to honor his memory may consider a donation to the American Heart Association www.heart.org or Mended Hearts www.mendedhearts.org, supporting heart disease research and patient care.
