Darrel Schnetter, 75, of Albert City died Oct. 18, 2024, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, surrounded by family.
Funeral Mass was held Monday, Oct. 21, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Burial was in Fairfield Cemetery in Albert City. Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.
Darrel Martin Schnetter, son of Martin and Benita (Nedved) Schnetter, was born in Laurens Jan. 11, 1949. He was baptized and confirmed in Varina St. Columbkille Catholic Church and remained a member there until his death. He went to grade school in Varina and high school at Albert City-Truesdale, graduating in 1967. He then attended one year of college at SCI and one year at UNI. Darrel worked for Quad State Construction. He then started farming. In August 1969, he entered the Army National Guard DET1HHB1-194 FA in Storm Lake. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in Battalion Communications and was Chief of six wire teams. Darrel was honorably discharged in August 1975.
Darrel met the love of his life, Susan Rebhuhn, at a dance at The Cobblestone and they were married Dec. 4, 1971. Dancing was always a fun time for both – a good polka or the flying Dutchman and a slow waltz. Together they raised livestock, farmed and grew a large garden for over 50 years.
Darrel loved woodworking and made sure each family member had a piece made of walnut given each Christmas. He was a carpenter with his sidekick, Rick Sievers, for many years. Nothing was too big of a challenge.
Darrel was involved with Albert City Threshermen for many years, where he was honored to receive a Quilt of Valor. He was on the board of directors at ALCECO Elevator and most recently was on the board of directors for Pocahontas Mutual Insurance. Darrel served on the Albert City Legion 299 in the color guard and the firing squad. More than anything, Darrel treasured time with his family. He dearly loved his nieces and nephews and was proud to see what they had become.
Missing him will be his wife Sue of 52 years; brother Duane (Tammi) Schnetter; siblings-in-law, Doug (Marcia) Rebhuhn; nephews: Brent (Melisa) Schnetter and their children: Easton, Addison and Aubry; Cal (Carly) Rebhuhn; nieces: Tawnee (Frank) Rebhuhn and daughter Milo; Brittny Rebhuhn; Brady (Nelson) Rebhuhn; also Aaron and Marisa Dahlstrom and their sons, Otto and Olen; Michael and Steph Ackerman and family; Ben and Michelle McCollum and family; many good neighbors, dear friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by parents, Martin and Benita Schnetter; parents-in-law, Ray and Edna Rebhuhn; and nephew Bo Schnetter.
Old friends to greet him are Nick Ackerman, Lonnie Lullman and Bruce Hoffman. They are together again.
