Douglas Archer

Douglas James Archer, 64, of Newell died Monday, June 3, 2024, in Fonda.

Funeral services will take place Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:30-11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Douglas James Archer was born Dec. 1, 1959, to Evans and Betty Lou (Pewsey) Archer in Storm Lake. He was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Doug graduated from Albert City-Truesdale in 1978. He served in the United States Navy from 1978 until 1984. Doug was a member of the Moose Lodge and Knights of Columbus.

Many people knew Doug as the “Ice Man” as he worked for Arctic Glacier Ice for 28 years. He also worked at Midtown Convenience Store in Storm Lake. Most recently, Doug worked at Parks Brothers for eight years until his health would no longer allow him.

In his free time, Doug loved to golf, go bowling and was in a dart league. He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and playing in euchre tournaments. Doug could be found spending time in his garage while cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings.

Left to cherish his memory include his fiancé of 30 years, Sue Zemke; siblings: Cathy Bloom, Richard “Dick” (Rhonda) Archer, David (Joy) Archer, Gary Archer, Steve (Lori Funk) Archer and Ann (Barry) Shumate; uncles, Lyle Archer and Robert Pewsey; aunt Becky Ranck; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Evans and Betty Archer; stepfather William “Bill” Archer; brother-in-law Tim Bloom; Sue’s parents, Leslie and Irene Zemke.
