Raymond Steffen, the son of Mike and Rose (Buelt) Steffen, was born on April 6, 1940 in Carroll. In his youth, Raymond was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith.

Raymond started at a rural, one room school house in Sac County and then attended grade school and high school in Varina, where he graduated from St. Columbkille in 1958. After high school, he farmed and drove the U.S. Postal truck to Des Moines.

In June of 1963, Raymond enlisted into the United States Army where he faithfully served his country until April 1965 when he was honorably discharged.

On Sept. 28, 1963, Raymond was united in marriage to Judy Ruth Erickson at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. The couple was blessed with six children: Michelle, Regene, Michael, Jonathon, Jana and Stephanie.

Raymond was very active in his community through volunteering in the Dover Township Varina Fire Department, coaching and umping little league baseball, and helped with church fish fry. He was a member of Knights of Columbus in Fonda and in the American Legion in Varina where he held post and county offices. Above all, Raymond loved to spend time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Michelle (Robbie) Abbenhaus of Terril; Regene Steffen of Storm Lake; Michael (Trisha) Steffen of Charter Oak; Jonathon (Jill) Steffen of Early; Jana Lane of Sheldon; Stephanie Steffen of Fonda; sister, Inez Berns of Fort Atkinson; grandchildren: Amber Abbenhaus-Cagle of Spencer; Jarad Abbenhaus (special friend, Miranda Baudler) of Terril; RyAnne and Izabelle Steffen of Early; great-grandchildren: Justius Flannigan and Colton Cagle of Spencer; and his father and mother-in-law, Carl (Swede) and Ardie Erickson.
