Richard Katschman

Richard “Dick” E. Katschman, 76, of Sioux Rapids died Monday, Oct. 29, 2018 at Spencer Municipal Hospital. 

Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 2, at Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. Burial was in Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids with full military rites by the Sioux Rapids American Legion.

Richard “Dick” E. Katschman, the son of Hershel and Lora (Hoose) Katschman, was born at California, Mo., on July 21, 1942.  He lived his youth in the Council Bluffs community where he attended Manawa Elementary School, Longfellow Middle School and the Abraham Lincoln High School.  Following his education, he worked for a farm machinery company in Council Bluffs. Dick faithfully served his country in the United States Army from July 5, 1966 to April 23, 1968. He served during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of sergeant. 

On June 25, 1969, Dick was united in marriage to LaDonna Smith in Millard, Neb. and together they raised four children: Cynthia, Brenda, Richard Duane and Michael.  Following their marriage, Dick and LaDonna lived in Council Bluffs where he was employed with Midwest Walnut and he later worked for Blue Star Foods and did trucking for Lonnie Brizendine. They came to make their home in Sioux Rapids in November 1974. Dick worked for Ranco for 18 years and then he was employed with Scrivner in Laurens.  Dick enjoyed his final employment at Little Sioux Golf and Country Club in Sioux Rapids. He was also with the Sioux Rapids Fire Department for 26 years. 

Dick was a member of the Sioux Rapids American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW.  He will be remembered as an avid golfer and Dick also enjoyed skeet shooting, playing cribbage and all types of card, and snowmobiling.  Dick’s family was important to him and he loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and Dick gave each one of them a special nickname.

Dick’s life is loved, honored and cherished by his family which include his wife: LaDonna of Sioux Rapids; his children: Cynthia Garthoff of Early; Brenda (Tim) Peters of Wall Lake; Rich (Renee) Katschman of Norwalk; and Mike (Kasi) Katschman of Sioux Rapids; a “special daughter” Julie Burrell  of Rembrandt; his grandchildren: Emily Worthan, Kayla (Cody) Terry, Jared (Brittany) Garthoff, Dillon Kunneke, Brady (Haylee) Katschman, Ryan Garthoff, Sarah Katschman, Jakob Katschman, Skyler Lockwood, Riley Lockwood, Ian Lockwood, Brooklyn Katschman, Holli Landcaster (Craig Sinclair), Shelly (Ryan) Sup, Ryan (Michelle) Landcaster, Aaron Landcaster; his great-grandchildren: Owen and Olyvia Worthan; Kilian and Kieran Terry;  “Baby Garthoff;” Onisia, Carson, Creighton and Emerson Sup; and Alaina and Kaylee Landcaster; nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and step-dad Lora and Gerald Eblen; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Russell and Ila Smith; an infant brother, Forrest Dean, and a sister and brother-in-law Gloria and Tom Brown.
