Eugene Wunschel, Sr.

Eugene Frederick Wunschel, Sr., 88, of Wall Lake passed away on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. 

Eugene was born on May 14, 1929, to Frederick and Elizabeth (Jarl) Wunschel in Wall Lake. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake where he remained a lifetime member. 

Eugene graduated from Wall Lake High School.  He was inducted into the United States Navy on Dec. 29, 1950, serving on the USS Mansfield. He earned the China Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United National Service Medal and Navy Occupational Service Medal. Eugene was honorably discharged Oct. 29, 1954. When he returned home he began farming with his father and brother.

On Oct. 1, 1956, Eugene was united in marriage to Sandra Jean Harms at Peace Lutheran Church. They made their home on the family farm near Wall Lake where they brought up their children teaching them their values of faith and love of the land.  Six children were born to this union: Larry, Nancy, Albert, Jeannette, Eugene Jr. “Fred” and John.

Eugene loved farming. He also worked for the John Deere dealership in Waterloo and as night watchman for a road construction company. He was a member of American Legion Chalon Post No. 262 of Wall Lake. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed his kids and grandkids. He had a wonderful sense of humor and delighted in teasing and playing jokes on his grandkids, April Fools Day was always one of his favorite days. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, and enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and gardening. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children: Larry (Kathy) Wunschel of Mapleton, Albert Wunschel of Woodward, Jeannette (Russell) Mauer of Lake View, Eugene Jr. “Fred” Wunschel of Lake View, and John (Tonya) Wunschel of Orange City; grandchildren: Jennifer, Emily (Clint), Larry Jr. (Maggie), Colby, Claire, Tristin, Jordan, Andrew, Rachael, Devin (Heather), Kylie, Jaylin, Mitchell, Christopher, Stephenie, Preston, Eliseya, Makenzie, Isac, Reed, Adreana, Amber, Alexis, Rihana, Oliver and Anna; great-grandchildren: Taylor, Brandt, Liam, Nolan, Kaison, Kailyn, Ashton, Talon, and Aurora. Other survivors include his brother Duane (Bev) Wunschel of Wall Lake; his sister Betty Roth of Wall Lake; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Elizabeth; father-in-law Herman Harms; mother-in-law Winogene Harms; wife Sandra; daughter Nancy; granddaughter Autumn; brothers-in-law: Alvin Roth, Joe Harms and Kenny Harms; nephews: Leroy Roth, Gary Roth and Christopher Olerich; nieces: Marsha Dixon and Tammy Wunschel; and great-nephew Jeff Dixon.  

Funeral services for Eugene were held Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake with Rev. Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial followed at Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
