Ruth Schnieders

Ruth V. Schnieders, 93, of Storm Lake, passed into eternal life Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Aug. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Private family burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Mallard. Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements. 

Ruth was born and raised near Irene, S.D. the daughter of full Irish parents, Thomas Christopher and Lela Brady. She graduated from Yankton High School and was the top student in shorthand receiving a distinguished award.

Ruth worked at Drier Creamery in Yankton as a bookkeeper and assisted customers.

Ruth was united in marriage to Lester J. Schnieders on Aug. 30, 1948. To this union five daughters and one son were born: Patricia, James, Mary, Barbara, Susan and Jean. They made their home on a farm near Mallard.

As a farm wife, Ruth baked with love. She made the best white bread, caramel rolls and the very best farm cream fudge. She had huge vegetable gardens and enjoyed flowers. She learned how to sew and became a talented seamstress. Her enjoyment of sewing inspired her to make numerous quilts for her daughters and grandchildren. She also crocheted several colorful afghans. She and Lester loved ballroom dancing and they shared this passion with their children. Ruth played the piano and gave the girls the love of music and singing.

Ruth is survived by her five daughters: Patricia Ann (James) Ries of Monticello; Mary Katherine (Colin) Johnson of Albert City; Barbara Jean (Harvey) Grady of Granville; Susan Marie (Lowell) Sterler of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Jean Elizabeth (Matthew) Bobier of Burbank, S.D.; 12 grandchildren: Kelly (Jason) Dettbarn, Tonya (Greg) Dardis, Carl (Jill) Ries, Tom (Lindsay) Ries, Kara (Cameron) McCarty, Kimberly (Bill) Baskin, Karin (Dan) Sullivan, Kristin Borke, Erik Borke, Molly Grady (fiancé, Jordan Mitzel), Michael (Kim) Grady, David Grady; 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester Schnieders; son, James Edward; sister, Beth Terrill; brother-in-law, Hal Terrill; plus many other brothers and sisters-in-law.
