Council Notebook: Water rates hiked 3% per year for 5 years

The Storm Lake City Council passed an ordinance Monday mandating water rates increase 3% per year until 2022.

Finance Manager Brian Oakleaf told the council the city’s expenses in its water enterprise fund are expected to increase $803,913 over the next five years based on a study conducted by Veenstra & Kimm. City Manager Jim Patrick told The Storm Lake Times a series of upgrades at the Storm Lake Water Treatment Plant and the funding of a new water tower are the factors fueling the rate hike.
